Although one of the many benefits of concrete is how little maintenance it needs, so little than can even be considered as ‘maintenance-free’, there isn’t any material that doesn’t need a bit of love once in a while.

That’s why if you wish to improve your concrete driveway lifespan you need to provide adequate maintenance.

Here are some things you can do to preserve your concrete driveway life:

  • Remove oil stains as soon as you notice them:

Nothing can ruin your colored concrete driveway as oil stains. While you can try to keep your cars in good condition at all times so that they don’t spill oil, gasoline or any other greasy spills over your concrete driveway, there’s always the chance that this can happen. If you notice any of these kind of spills, don’t wait until it’s too late, remove them as soon as possible. You can try pressure washing, or using cleaning chemicals.

  • Apply a sealer:

Applying a sealer to your concrete driveway will help protect the concrete from absorbing any type of stains, plus it will keep it looking its best. Usually, you should reseal your concrete driveway every two years, or when the finish shows wear, but it also depends on the weather conditions and the foot or vehicle traffic it receives. Ask your concrete contractor for recommendations on the best brands.

  • Use it well:

A well maintained concrete driveway can last for a lifetime if you take good care of it. Concrete is one of the most durable and strong construction materials, but a residential concrete driveway is not designed to support the weight of heavy vehicles, so have in mind that your beautiful concrete driveway will last as long as you want it to last, depending in how well your treat it.

I hadn’t thought about applying a sealer to my driveway to stop stains. I do a fair amount of vehicle maintenance out on the driveway and it has a fair amount of splotches and stains from oil and other fluids dripping or spilling. I’ll have to look into a good cleaning and sealing so I can get my concrete looking good!

These are some great tips, and I appreciate your advice to remove any oil stains on your concrete immediately. My husband and I just moved into a new house, and we want to pave the driveway with concrete, and I want to make sure it lasts us as long as possible. I’ll definitely watch for any oil stains so I can get rid of them as soon as possible. Thanks for the great post!

I didn’t know that a sealer was necessary to protect concrete. My family has decided to change our driveway instead of our patio. I’ll have to start looking for concrete contractors soon. I can ask them which sealer is best too. Thanks.

These are some great tips, and I appreciate your advice to remove any oil stains you see on your driveway as soon as you notice them. My husband and I are about to have our driveway paved, and we’ve decided to go with concrete. We want to make sure we take good care of it so it lasts a long time, so we’ll definitely make sure to remove any oil stains that we see right away so they don’t soak into the concrete. Thanks for the great post!

It’s good to know that a well-maintained concrete driveway can last for a lifetime if you take care of it. If cracks develop in the concrete, is there anything we can do to repair them? Is a concrete sealer something that you can buy and apply yourself or do you recommend using a professional service? I will be sure to remove oil stains as quickly as possible. Thank you for your helpful tips!

I didn’t know that I should apply a sealer to my driveway. It would be nice to be able to keep my driveway as nice as it can. Concrete can get boring looking. But, I bet that sealed concrete will add to the value of the concrete and add a bit more style to it. Plus, it would be nice to have something that helps to keep the stains away!

I didn’t know that you could put a sealer on concrete to protect it. Is it easy to identify when the sealer is wearing off? We use our driveway a lot and have bad winters, so I think we should probably have it applied more than every two years. Thanks for these great tips!

Thanks for the recommendation to apply a sealer to a concrete driveway, I never would have thought that something like that would help. I’ve heard that stamped concrete is becoming pretty popular. Is stamped concrete any more maintenance-intensive than regular concrete? I’ll look more into sealing my concrete if I have a driveway or walkway in the future!

I really like your tip for applying a sealer. That definitely seems like a great way to make sure that your concrete lasts a long time. My husband and I are going to be getting our driveway done next week so we will be sure to ask our contractor about a sealer. Thanks for sharing!

I just got some concrete laid in my back yard and I am wondering how to make it last as long as possible. That is a good idea to apply a sealer. When the company was pouring the concrete, they asked if we would need a sealer. I said no, but now that I know the importance, I will have the sealer put on it.

Thanks for bringing to my attention the value of applying a sealer to your concrete driveway. I’ve decided that it’s time to have my driveway paved again, and I’d like to use concrete. Perhaps it would be a good idea to have that sealed once it’s installed so it will last as long as possible.

I love how you talked about removing oil stains as quickly as possible. I think a lot of people forget about this simple step and then are forced to deal with it later when they cannot get it out themselves. I was unaware that a nice driveway could last you a lifetime if you keep it maintained. Thanks for all the advice!

  13. Victoria contractors says:

Dirt and debris can easily collect on your concrete surface over time. It is best to keep it swept and cleaned regularly to avoid the dirt particles from entering the pores of the concrete.

  14. Annika Larson says:

Our concrete driveway is very cracked and stained. I would love to have it replaced with new concrete and have a sealer applied, as you suggested. Hopefully, we can have this done soon and we will be sure of these other maintenance tips as well. Thanks for sharing!
